Old Cranleighan HC has had a successful season away from the club, continuing its community engagement through its growing Outreach Programme aimed at local primary schools.
Following on from its inauguration last year, this season saw the initiative bring the excitement of hockey to 6 primary schools across The Dittons and Molesey area, reaching children from Year 2 to Year 6 and inspiring both boys and girls to get active, develop teamwork skills, and try something new. The programme is already leaving a positive impact on hundreds of children’s school day.
What started off small last year has now expanded into structured school sessions and even early-morning Breakfast Clubs, offering pupils the opportunity to start their day with sport and a healthy routine. The club’s Outreach Programme is not only promoting physical activity but also fostering community spirit, confidence, and a love for the game.
The initiative has been spearheaded by Junior Chair Toby Yonge, whose commitment has laid the groundwork for success with the support of Junior Director of Hockey Adam Ward. Delivery of the sessions has been expertly led by our professional and dedicated coaches Miguel Ralha and John Shaw, who have become familiar and much-appreciated faces in local schools.
The club’s goal was to make hockey accessible and fun for children who may not have otherwise had the opportunity and we are proud of what’s been achieved so far. This is cemented by the of positive feedback from our partner schools including that from Thames Ditton Junior School who commented, “The coaching sessions with Miguel were great and the children really loved him being here.”
The programme has been made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the London Hockey Futures programme and the generosity of playing members who have provided personal additional sponsorship. Both contributions have helped with equipment and coaching time.
As the club looks ahead, it hopes to build on this foundation and continue to nurture the next generation of hockey players from the grassroots level up — proving that community, passion, and sport are a winning combination.
